As manufacturers look for ways to improve efficiency, enhance product performance and reduce their environmental impact, powder coatings are becoming an increasingly popular finishing solution.
With continued advancements in coating technology, PPG is investing in solutions that help businesses meet changing industry demands. From durability to production flexibility, powder coatings offer several advantages across automotive, general industrial, appliance, furniture and architectural markets.
Why Manufacturers Are Turning to Powder Coatings
Powder coatings offer a variety of benefits that make them an attractive alternative to traditional liquid coating systems, including:
- Exceptional durability: Provides strong resistance to corrosion, wear and environmental exposure.
- Excellent edge coverage: Helps protect hard-to-reach areas and complex surfaces.
- Design flexibility: Available in a wide range of colors, textures and finishes.
- Improved material utilization: Overspray can often be collected and reused, helping reduce waste.
- Environmental benefits: Typically formulated without solvents that emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
These advantages help manufacturers achieve quality finishes while supporting more efficient production processes and sustainability goals.
PPG Expands Powder Coating Manufacturing Capabilities
PPG recently announced a $2 million investment in its powder coating manufacturing facility in Verbania, Italy. The expansion adds two production lines equipped with advanced extrusion and milling technology.
These upgrades will help PPG better serve customers throughout Europe, the Middle East and Africa by increasing production flexibility, shortening lead times and improving its ability to fulfill smaller, specialized orders. The investment also supports reduced material waste, lower energy consumption and improved operational efficiency.
The facility serves several industries, including general industrial finishing, architectural extrusions, appliances, radiators and chassis components. It will also improve access to PPG’s advanced technologies, including PPG CORAFLON® Platinum, a hyper-durable powder coating designed for architectural applications.
Built for demanding exterior environments, CORAFLON Platinum offers exceptional weatherability and outstanding color and gloss retention, helping deliver long-lasting finishes without sacrificing design flexibility.
A Growing Global Investment
The Verbania expansion is part of PPG’s broader commitment to strengthening its global powder coating manufacturing network.
In 2023, PPG invested $44 million in powder coating facilities across the United States and Latin America. These upgrades expanded production capacity, introduced bonded metallic powder capabilities and improved processing efficiency through automation.
Today, PPG operates 21 powder coating manufacturing facilities worldwide, along with multiple bonding sites, a dedicated powder resin plant, a powder coatings research and development center and a global center of excellence.
Looking Ahead
As manufacturers continue to prioritize performance, efficiency and sustainability, powder coatings will remain an important part of the evolving industrial finishing industry.
Through continued investments in manufacturing, research and development, and advanced coating technologies, PPG is helping customers meet today’s challenges while preparing for future demands.
At Colours, we’re proud to be part of the PPG Platinum Network and connect our customers with innovative coating solutions backed by industry-leading technology and expertise.
